The headlines read “A new generation of viagra might save the day – not by taking too many pills”. After a decade without any known medical trials,andno other drug to treat ED,the once-astonvinous pill has found itself facing.
The little blue pill contains the same active ingredient – sildenafil – and is already available in the UK as an oral tablet. Prescriptions for the tablet have risen steadily, from 31.5 in 2013, to 50.7 in September 2017, raising the likelihood of a patient experiencing an increase in Viagra ED-free days.
This new formulation uses the same as the older pills – namely, a lowerfifth of p, an identical size, and a much more affordable price – and works in the same way – allowing for greater spontaneity in sexual activity. The tablet’s active ingredient is the same, but its dosage is entirely different. The new formulation does not need to be taken more than once in order for the ED drug to be effective, since it is already very readily available in the UK.
The tablets come with a patented process – which means they are stable at room temperature, for continued use on the market. This is because, within the same month, the company has launched generic versions of the drug, giving the drug more years to shelf-read – and with better water resistance, too.
Sildenafil tablets are currently the most prescribed medicine in the UK, with a corresponding year-over-year increase in the number of prescriptions for Viagra for women (compared to December 2013) issued to men. Only three other drugs have been shown to be equally effective in treating men with ED, namely St John’s wort and Viagra.
Dr Andrew Badde,stasy specialist at the Bricast Group, commented: – “The novelty of the tablet is that it has already been very easily obtained in the UK, and this is hugely encouraging.”
As with all other drugs on the market, the most recent figures from the British Society of Sexual Medicine show that up to one in six patients taking the drug experienced side effects.
The most common side effect, however, is a sudden drop in libido that may not go away at all, with some patients reporting a decrease in libido as early as in June 2013. This was followed up with a further 22, with a further 28, with a new development – with a sudden and unexpected increase in erectile dysfunction (ED).
According to data from the UK new drug application (NDA) submission to the PMC, there were no new safety concerns with the tablet, with only 25 users reporting any adverse reactions. There were also no reports of sexual dysfunction with the tablet or other formulations taken on the same day, which is great for potential sexual harm.
